Porsche 917K - Japan GP 1969 - #14
Porsche System Engineering - Jo Siffert/David Piper
Ebbro item 43748

This is a rare collectors model in 1:43 scale by Ebbro of Japan, brand new in original packaging, Ebbro item number 43748.

In the late sixties the Japanese GP was a sports car race and invariably was a battle between the Nissans, Toyotas and Porsches. The 1969 GP was held on October 10 at Fuji International Speedway and attracted a field of 40 cars, Nissans awesome V12 R382s, Toyotas 7 and 917 and 908 Porsches at the top end of the field.

The big Nissans were unbeatable, and this car, the Porsche System Engineering entered 917K (chassis number 010) finished in sixth place, driven by Jo Siffert and David Piper.

The Porsche 917 was produced in 1969 specifically to mount an assault on long distance races and the Le Mans 24 Hour in particular. Based on the 908, it initially featured a new 4.5 litre air cooled flat 12 engine with 580 bhp and a top speed of close to 300 kmh. It was very light and used magnesium extensively to reduce weight. The 917K was a short tailed version more suited to sprints and medium distance events. 1969 was a development year, the cars being fast but unstable, and it was not until 1970 that they were finally sorted and won the Le Mans classic.

This model features accurate cast alloy race wheels with correct profile Dunlop race tyres. The body is very nicely proportioned and depicts the original car very accurately. Other features include rear view mirror, filler caps, jacking points, roll cage, exhaust system plus all the correct race markings, vents and grilles.

The interior is also very well done, with steering wheel, fully detailed dashboard and instrument panel, gearshift and race seats with Sabelt harness. There is also full engine detail, with the flat twelve injected engine and chassis tubes clearly visible in the rear bodywork. The rear underside is also a lovely piece of modelling, with the engine, gearbox, exhaust system, chassis tubes and disc brakes all accurately represented and painted in all the correct colours.

This is a magnificent model and without doubt the finest 917K model made to date - it will satisfy the most demanding of collectors.
